read moreThere is something profoundly peaceful about standing in the biting cold of late December, breath misting in the air, waiting for the sky to fall. For many astronomy enthusiasts, the year doesn't truly end until the Little Dipper has had its final say. While the Geminids often steal the spotlight earlier in the month with their flashy numbers, the ursid meteor showers offer a quieter, more intimate celestial closing ceremony for the year.
The Ursids are often overlooked, sandwiched between the spectacular Geminids and the holiday festivities. Yet, for the dedicated skywatcher, they represent a unique opportunity. They are the underdog of meteor showers—often sparse, sometimes surprising, and always a test of patience against the winter solstice chill. Having spent countless nights documenting astronomical events, I’ve found that the Ursids reward those who are willing to brave the longest nights of the year with moments of stark, silent beauty.
Every meteor shower has a parent, a celestial body that leaves behind a trail of dust and debris. When Earth plows through this debris stream during its orbit around the sun, the particles burn up in our atmosphere, creating the streaks of light we call shooting stars. For the ursid meteor showers, that parent is Comet 8P/Tuttle.
Discovered first in 1790 and then rediscovered by Horace Tuttle in 1858, this periodic comet orbits the sun roughly every 13.6 years. Unlike the dusty, broad stream left by the Swift-Tuttle comet (which gives us the famous Perseids), the debris stream from 8P/Tuttle is somewhat narrow. This is why the Ursids are a short-duration event. We don't drift through the stream for weeks; we punch through it relatively quickly.
The radiant point—the spot in the sky from which the meteors appear to originate—is located in the constellation Ursa Minor, the Little Bear. Specifically, they radiate from near the star Kochab, which is the brighter of the two outer stars in the bowl of the Little Dipper. Because Ursa Minor is a circumpolar constellation for most northern hemisphere viewers (meaning it never sets), the radiant is up all night. This is a massive advantage compared to other showers where you have to wait until 3 AM for the radiant to rise.
Honesty is crucial in astronomy. If you go out expecting a storm of fireballs like the Perseids or Geminids, you will be disappointed. The Ursids are a minor shower, typically producing about 5 to 10 meteors per hour at their peak. It’s a subtle show. It requires a dark sky and a lot of patience.
However, the Ursids have a history of being unpredictable. In 1945 and 1986, observers were shocked to see bursts of up to 50 or even 100 meteors per hour. While astronomers aren't predicting an outburst for the coming cycle, the erratic nature of meteor showers means there is always a non-zero chance of a surprise. It’s that gambler’s thrill that keeps seasoned observers looking up.
The meteors themselves are generally medium-speed, hitting the atmosphere at about 33 kilometers (20 miles) per second. They aren't the fastest, nor the slowest. They don't typically leave long, lingering trains (smoke trails) like the Leonids, but they can be surprisingly bright.
