While the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale is commonly used in the Atlantic, different scales are used to classify typhoons. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the official Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre for the western North Pacific, uses its own classification system based on maximum sustained wind speed. They categorize typhoons as Tropical Depressions, Tropical Storms, Severe Tropical Storms, Typhoons, and Violent Typhoons. Violent Typhoons are the most intense, with maximum sustained winds of at least 118 knots (219 km/h or 137 mph).
It’s important to note that wind speed isn’t the only factor determining the impact of a typhoon. The size of the storm, its forward speed, and the amount of rainfall it produces all contribute to the potential for damage. A slower-moving typhoon can dump massive amounts of rain, leading to widespread flooding, even if its winds aren't exceptionally strong.
The western North Pacific is one of the most active tropical cyclone basins in the world. Typhoons frequently impact countries and regions including the Philippines, Japan, China, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. The peak of typhoon season is typically from July to October, although they can occur year-round.
Coastal communities are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of typhoons. Storm surge, the abnormal rise in sea level during a storm, can inundate low-lying areas, causing significant damage to infrastructure and property. Strong winds can topple trees, power lines, and buildings, while heavy rainfall can trigger landslides and flash floods.

Warmer ocean temperatures provide more fuel for these storms, potentially leading to stronger winds and heavier rainfall. Rising sea levels also exacerbate the impacts of storm surge, making coastal communities even more vulnerable.
Furthermore, some research suggests that climate change may be altering the tracks of typhoons, potentially exposing new areas to their destructive force. Understanding these changes is crucial for developing effective adaptation and mitigation strategies.
