It perfectly captures the visual drama of these celestial wanderers. Unlike the steady, reliable planets or the distant, twinkling stars, a comet feels like an event. It is a disruption in the cosmic order, a temporary guest that leaves a streak of brilliance before vanishing into the dark.

But what exactly are these objects? Why have they terrified ancient civilizations and fascinated modern astronomers in equal measure? Let’s dive deep into the science, the mythology, and the sheer wonder of comets.

The Dirty Snowballs of Space

Astronomer Fred Whipple famously coined the term "dirty snowball" to describe a comet nucleus, and honestly, the description still holds up.
