What Exactly is the Air Quality Index (AQI)?

The AQI is essentially a yardstick used by government agencies to communicate to the public how polluted the air currently is or how polluted it is forecast to become. It focuses on health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. The AQI translates air pollution data into a simple, easy-to-understand number and corresponding color. The AQI Scale and What It Means

• 51-100: Moderate. Air quality is acceptable; however, for some pollutants, there may be a moderate health concern for a very small number of people who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
• 101-150: Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Members of sensitive groups may experience health effects. The general public is not likely to be affected. Sensitive groups include children, the elderly, and individuals with heart or lung disease.
• 151-200: Unhealthy. Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious effects.
• 201-300: Very Unhealthy. Health alert: everyone may experience more serious health effects.
• 301-500: Hazardous. Health warnings of emergency conditions. The entire population is more likely to be affected.

What Pollutants Does the AQI Measure?

The AQI typically tracks five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act:

• Ground-level Ozone: Formed when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight.
• Particulate Matter: A mixture of solid particles and liquid droplets found in the air. It can be coarse (PM10) or fine (PM2.5), with PM2.5 being particularly dangerous as it can penetrate deep into the lungs.
• Carbon Monoxide: A colorless, odorless gas produced by the incomplete burning of fuels such as gasoline, wood, propane, and natural gas.
• Sulfur Dioxide: Primarily released from the burning of fossil fuels at power plants and industrial facilities.
• Nitrogen Dioxide: Comes from emissions from cars, trucks and buses, power plants, and off-road equipment.
