read moreWhen you live in a country as geographically diverse as India, the word "weather" feels too clinical, too detached. Instead, we use the word मौसम. It carries a weight, a poetic resonance that goes beyond mere temperature readings and humidity percentages. It speaks to the mood of the sky, the smell of the earth after the first rain, and the rhythm of life itself.
I remember visiting my grandmother in Kerala during the onset of the monsoon. The sky didn't just turn grey; it bruised purple. The air grew heavy, almost expectant. When the heavens finally opened, it wasn't just rain; it was a festival of water. This deep connection to the elements is why understanding the local climate is crucial for anyone traveling through or living in the subcontinent. It isn't just about carrying an umbrella; it's about knowing which crops are being sown, which festivals are being celebrated, and how the daily routine shifts with the sun.
Unlike the standard four seasons found in many Western countries, the Indian subcontinent experiences a more complex cycle. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) officially designates four seasons, but culturally, we often recognize six distinct periods known as Ritus. However, for practical purposes, most people navigate their lives through three primary phases: the Summer, the Monsoon, and the Winter.
Summer in India is an endurance test. From April to June, the heat builds up like a pressure cooker. In the northern plains, temperatures frequently breach the 45°C mark. It is a dry, scorching heat that turns the afternoon streets silent. Yet, this intense heat is necessary. It creates the low-pressure trough that eventually pulls the life-giving monsoon winds from the ocean.
Then comes the most celebrated aspect of Indian मौसम: the Monsoon. It is difficult to overstate the importance of the rainy season. It is the economic lifeline of an agrarian society. When the rains are good, the stock markets cheer, the farmers rejoice, and the rivers swell. When they fail, the anxiety is palpable across the nation.
One of the biggest mistakes travelers make is assuming the weather is uniform across the country. I once had a friend fly from the humid coasts of Mumbai to the mountains of Ladakh in October, packing only t-shirts and shorts. He spent the first two days of his trip shivering in a borrowed jacket. The diversity is staggering.
In the far north, the climate is alpine. Winters are harsh, with heavy snowfall closing mountain passes for months. The air is crisp and thin. In contrast, the plains of Delhi and Punjab experience extreme continentality—very hot summers and surprisingly cold winters. The fog in December can be so dense that you can barely see your hand in front of your face, disrupting flights and trains for days.
Move south or to the coasts, and the concept of winter disappears. In cities like Chennai or Kochi, the weather oscillates between "hot" and "hot and humid." The proximity to the ocean acts as a moderator, preventing extreme temperature drops, but the humidity can be relentless. Here, the मौसम is defined less by temperature
