The Earth's outer layer, the lithosphere, isn't one solid piece. Instead, it's broken up into massive tectonic plates that are constantly moving, albeit very slowly. These plates interact in various ways: they collide, slide past each other, or move apart. The majority of earthquakes occur at the boundaries of these plates. When these plates get stuck, pressure builds up over time. Eventually, the accumulated stress exceeds the friction holding them together, and they suddenly slip, releasing energy in the form of seismic waves. This release of energy is what we experience as an earthquake.

While earthquakes can technically occur anywhere, they are far more common in certain regions. The magnitude of an earthquake is typically measured using the Richter scale or the moment magnitude scale. The Richter scale, developed by Charles Richter in the 1930s, measures the amplitude of seismic waves recorded on a seismograph. However, it's less accurate for large earthquakes. The moment magnitude scale is a more sophisticated measure that takes into account the size of the fault rupture, the amount of slip, and the rigidity of the rocks. This scale provides a more accurate estimate of the total energy released by an earthquake.
Each whole number increase on the magnitude scale represents a tenfold increase in the amplitude of the seismic waves and roughly a 32-fold increase in the energy released. So, a magnitude 6 earthquake is ten times stronger than a magnitude 5, and releases about 32 times more energy.
Despite significant advances in seismology, predicting earthquakes remains a major challenge. Scientists can identify areas that are at high risk based on historical data and plate tectonic activity, but pinpointing the exact time, location, and magnitude of an earthquake is still beyond our capabilities. There are many ongoing research efforts focused on identifying potential precursors to earthquakes, such as changes in ground deformation, groundwater levels, and electromagnetic signals. However, no reliable and universally accepted method for predicting earthquakes has been developed.
While we can't predict earthquakes with certainty, we can focus on preparedness. This includes building codes that require earthquake-resistant construction, public education campaigns on what to do during an earthquake, and early warning systems that can provide a few seconds of notice before the arrival of strong shaking. These few seconds can be enough to take cover and potentially save lives.
