The Celestial Snowballs of History

To truly understand what a comet is, you have to strip away the glowing tail that makes them famous. At its heart, a comet is essentially a dirty snowball. It is a nucleus composed of rock, dust, water ice, and frozen gases like carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, and ammonia.
