According to ancient texts, the Moon God (Soma) was cursed by his father-in-law, Daksha Prajapati, to lose his luster and wane into nothingness. Desperate to regain his light, Soma prayed to Lord Shiva at this very spot for thousands of years.

Pleased by his penance, Shiva relieved him of the curse, though not entirely—hence the waxing and waning of the moon we see today. In gratitude, the Moon God built a temple of pure gold.
