The Legend of the Moon God

The origins of this sacred site are steeped in mythology that predates recorded history. The name "Somnath" translates to "Lord of the Soma," referring to the Moon God. According to ancient texts, the Moon God (Soma) was cursed by his father-in-law, Daksha Prajapati, to lose his luster and wane into nothingness. Desperate to regain his light, Soma prayed to Lord Shiva at this very spot for thousands of years.

Pleased by his penance, Shiva lifted the curse, allowing the moon to wax and wane in cycles rather than disappear forever. In gratitude, Soma built a golden temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is said that the temple was rebuilt in silver by Ravana, in sandalwood by Lord Krishna, and finally in stone by Bhimdev of Gujarat. This mythological progression mirrors the physical reality of the temple—it has constantly evolved, shifted, and been reborn through the ages.

A History of Destruction and Resurrection

However, the story didn't end there. Following Ghazni, the temple was destroyed by Alaudin Khilji in 1296, Muzaffar Shah in 1375, and eventually the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1706.
