सांप! नाम सुनते ही कई लोगों के मन में डर और सिहरन पैदा हो जाती है। लेकिन, क्या आप जानते हैं कि सांप धरती पर मौजूद सबसे पुराने जीवों में से एक हैं? ये अद्भुत जीव लगभग हर महाद्वीप पर पाए जाते हैं और इनकी लगभग 3,000 से अधिक प्रजातियां मौजूद हैं। सांपों की दुनिया रहस्यों से भरी है और इन्हें समझना बेहद दिलचस्प है।
सांपों की शारीरिक संरचना उन्हें बाकी जीवों से अलग बनाती है। इनके शरीर पर मौजूद शल्क (scales) इन्हें सुरक्षा प्रदान करते हैं और इन्हें रेगिस्तान की तपती गर्मी से लेकर बर्फीली ठंड तक, हर तरह के वातावरण में जीवित रहने में मदद करते हैं। सांपों की रीढ़ की हड्डी में 200 से 400 तक कशेरुकाएं (vertebrae) होती हैं, जो उन्हें लचीला बनाती हैं। यही लचीलापन उन्हें शिकार को जकड़ने और बिलों में घुसने में मदद करता है।
सांपों के जबड़े भी कमाल के होते हैं। इनके जबड़े हड्डियों और मांसपेशियों से इस तरह जुड़े होते हैं कि ये अपने मुंह को बहुत बड़ा खोल सकते हैं और अपने से बड़े शिकार को भी निगल सकते हैं। कुछ सांपों में विष ग्रंथियां (venom glands) होती हैं, जिनसे वे अपने शिकार को मारने या पंगु बनाने के लिए जहर छोड़ते हैं।
सांप मांसाहारी होते हैं और इनका मुख्य भोजन चूहे, पक्षी, कीड़े-मकोड़े और अन्य छोटे जानवर होते हैं। कुछ बड़े सांप तो हिरण और मगरमच्छ जैसे जानवरों को भी निगल जाते हैं। सांप अपने शिकार को पकड़ने के लिए कई तरीकों का इस्तेमाल करते हैं। कुछ सांप शिकार को जहरीले दांतों से काटते हैं, जबकि कुछ शिकार को अपने शरीर से जकड़कर मार डालते हैं।
सांपों का प्रजनन भी दिलचस्प होता है। कुछ सांप अंडे देते हैं, जबकि कुछ सीधे बच्चे जन्म देते हैं। मादा सांप आमतौर पर एक बार में कई अंडे देती है। अंडों से निकलने के बाद बच्चे खुद ही अपना भोजन ढूंढना शुरू कर देते हैं।
सांप आमतौर पर अकेले रहने वाले जीव होते हैं, लेकिन कुछ प्रजातियां समूहों में भी पाई जाती हैं। ये सांप एक-दूसरे के साथ शिकार करने और खुद को बचाने में मदद करते हैं।
