The Legend of the Lion’s Hill

The name "Simhachalam" translates to "Lion's Hill" (Simha: Lion, Achala: Hill). The deity here is unique. Unlike other Narasimha temples where the Lord appears in a terrifying form (Ugra form), here he is worshipped as Varaha Narasimha—a dual avatar combining the boar (Varaha) and the lion-man (Narasimha).

According to local lore and the Sthala Purana, this temple is connected to the story of Prahlada. Prahlada, a devout follower of Lord Vishnu, was tormented by his father, the demon king Hiranyakashipu. Legend has it that Hiranyakashipu threw his son off this very hill into the sea, placing the hill on top of him to crush him. Lord Vishnu saved his devotee by jumping over the hill and lifting it.
