Often referred to as Tilkuta Chauth, Magh Chaturthi, or Sankat Chauth, the festival's name itself reveals its purpose. "Sankat" translates to trouble or crisis, and "Chauth" refers to the fourth day. Devotees believe that observing this fast eliminates obstacles from their children's lives. It is Lord Ganesha, the Vighnaharta (Remover of Obstacles), who is the central figure of worship.

'Til' (sesame) and 'Kuta' (pounded) refer to the mixture of pounded sesame seeds and jaggery offered as 'Naivedya'.

From an Ayurvedic perspective, this tradition makes perfect sense. Falling in the chilly month of January or February, the body requires heat and energy. Sesame and jaggery are warming foods that boost immunity during the peak of winter. The Legend: The Story of the Potter and the Old Woman

No Hindu fast is complete without the 'Vrat Katha' (fasting story). The narrative traditionally recited during the puja varies slightly by region, but the core message remains the same: the triumph of faith over adversity.

One popular legend tells of a potter in a village whose kiln would not harden the pots. Desperate, he consulted a priest who suggested a horrific remedy: sacrificing a child each time the kiln was fired. The King decreed that each family must offer a child in rotation. Eventually, it was the turn of an old woman who had only one son. It was the day of Sakat Chauth.
