The journey to the hilltop shrine is steeped in mythology and rigorous tradition. It requires a preparation of body and mind that few other modern pilgrimages demand. Whether you are a first-time pilgrim (a "Kanni Ayyappan") or a seasoned veteran (a "Guruswamy"), the path up the mountain levels everyone. Here, social status, wealth, and ego are shed like old skin, leaving only the devotee and the divine.
To understand the fervor behind the pilgrimage, one must understand the deity at its center. Lord Ayyappa is believed to be the son of Shiva and Mohini (an avatar of Vishnu), born to defeat the demoness Mahishi. The lore tells of a young prince who abandoned his royal heritage to meditate in the solitude of the forests. The temple marks the spot where he is said to have merged with the divine.
The mythology is palpable as you walk through the Erumely route, traditionally believed to be the path Ayyappa himself took. Pilgrims first pay respects at the mosque of Vavar Swami before ascending the hills, a powerful symbol of communal harmony that has stood the test of time.
The pilgrimage actually begins long before one sets foot in Kerala. It starts in the home. The 'Vratam' or penance is a mandatory 41-day period of austerity.
