The pradosh vrat katha holds immense significance in Hindu mythology. Observed on the trayodashi tithi (13th day) of both Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha in the Hindu calendar, Pradosh Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Fasting and offering prayers on this day are believed to grant devotees their wishes and bring prosperity.
The word "Pradosh" signifies the twilight period, particularly the three hours before sunset. Legend has it that during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan), a deadly poison called "Halahala" emerged, threatening to destroy the entire universe. Lord Shiva, in his infinite compassion, consumed the poison, holding it in his throat, which turned blue. This act saved the world from annihilation. The deities, grateful for his sacrifice, worshipped Lord Shiva during the Pradosh period. Thus, observing Pradosh Vrat became a way to express gratitude and seek Lord Shiva's blessings.

Listening to or reading the pradosh vrat katha is an integral part of the Pradosh Vrat rituals. Several versions of the katha exist, each narrating the glory of Lord Shiva and the benefits of observing the fast. One popular version tells the story of a poor Brahmin and a widow.
Once upon a time, there lived a poor Brahmin with his wife. They were deeply devoted to Lord Shiva but struggled with poverty. One day, the Brahmin, while wandering in search of food, found a young boy named Dharampal who was an orphan. The Brahmin took him home and raised him as his own son. Dharampal was a devout and intelligent boy.
One day, Dharampal discovered his father talking about poverty and worried that he would die. Dharampal asked his father what was wrong. His father narrated the story of their financial constraints. Dharampal left to pray and seek a solution from Lord Shiva.
Dharampal, being a devout follower of Lord Shiva, went to the forest and started meditating. One day, he came across a group of Gandharvas. They informed him that they were cursed and were suffering. The Gandharvas requested Dharampal to offer Pradosh Vrat for them. Dharampal agreed and observed the Pradosh Vrat with utmost devotion. As a result, the Gandharvas were freed from their curse and blessed Dharampal with immense wealth and prosperity.
Dharampal returned home and shared his newfound wealth with the Brahmin and his wife. From that day onwards, their poverty vanished, and they lived a life of comfort and happiness. The story emphasizes the power of devotion and the blessings of Lord Shiva bestowed upon those who observe the Pradosh Vrat with sincerity.
Another version of the pradosh vrat katha tells the story of a widow who lived with her son. They were extremely poor and struggled to make ends meet. One day, the widow's son found a precious gem. He thought of selling it and using the money to improve their lives. However, he felt guilty about selling something so valuable and decided to offer it to Lord Shiva.
