The story of Khatu Shyam begins with Barbarik, the grandson of Bhima (one of the Pandava brothers) and the son of Ghatotkacha. Barbarik was an incredibly powerful warrior, blessed with three infallible arrows. Each arrow, once released, would seek out its intended target, and if no target existed, it would return to Barbarik. His mother, Maurvi, instilled in him the values of bravery, charity, and fighting only for the weaker side.
During the epic battle of Mahabharata, Barbarik decided to join the war. Lord Krishna, knowing Barbarik's immense power and his vow to support the weaker side, understood that Barbarik's participation could have unintended consequences. Whichever side was losing would automatically gain Barbarik's support, potentially prolonging the war indefinitely and leading to unimaginable destruction.
Disguised as a Brahmin, Lord Krishna stopped Barbarik on his way to Kurukshetra. He challenged Barbarik, questioning how he could hope to win the war with only three arrows. Barbarik, confident in his abilities, demonstrated the power of his arrows, proving their accuracy and destructive potential.
Krishna then asked Barbarik for a "daan" (donation), a customary request from a Brahmin. Barbarik, true to his word, promised to fulfill the Brahmin's wish. Krishna then revealed his true form and asked for Barbarik's head as the ultimate sacrifice. Despite knowing the consequences, Barbarik honored his promise. He only requested that he be allowed to witness the entire Mahabharata war.
Lord Krishna granted Barbarik's wish. He placed Barbarik's head atop a hill overlooking the battlefield, allowing him to witness the entire war. Impressed by Barbarik's selflessness and devotion, Krishna declared that after the war, Barbarik would be worshipped in the Kaliyuga (the present age) as Khatu Shyam. Krishna blessed him, saying that his name would be synonymous with devotion and that devotees would have their wishes fulfilled simply by uttering his name with sincerity.
Today, the Khatu Shyam temple in Khatu, Rajasthan, is a major pilgrimage site. Millions of devotees visit the temple every year, seeking blessings and fulfillment of their wishes. The atmosphere is electric, filled with chanting, devotional songs (bhajans), and the unwavering faith of the pilgrims. The "Sheesh Daan," the act of donating his head, is central to Khatu Shyam's story, emphasizing the importance of sacrifice and selfless devotion.
