read moreThe name Kanhaiya Kumar resonates with many in India, evoking a spectrum of emotions and opinions. From student activism to national politics, his journey has been anything but conventional. This article delves into the various facets of Kanhaiya Kumar's life, exploring his background, his ideologies, and his impact on contemporary Indian society.
Born in Bihat, a village in Begusarai, Bihar, Kanhaiya Kumar's early life was marked by the challenges typical of a lower-middle-class family in rural India. His father, a farmer, and his mother, an Anganwadi worker, instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance. Despite the financial constraints, Kanhaiya excelled in academics, demonstrating a keen interest in social issues from a young age. His pursuit of higher education led him to Patna University and later to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, where he enrolled for a PhD in African studies.
JNU, known for its vibrant political culture and intellectual debates, proved to be a turning point in Kanhaiya Kumar's life. He became actively involved in student politics, eventually being elected as the President of the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) in 2015. His tenure as JNUSU President was marked by his fiery speeches and his advocacy for social justice and marginalized communities. However, it was also during this period that he found himself at the center of a major controversy. In February 2016, an event was organized on the JNU campus to protest the judicial killing of Afzal Guru, a convict in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack. Following the event, Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on charges of sedition and other offenses. The arrest sparked widespread protests across the country, with many denouncing it as a politically motivated attack on dissent. While kanhaiya kumar maintained his innocence, the controversy catapulted him into the national spotlight.
Kanhaiya Kumar identifies as a Leftist and has been a vocal critic of right-wing politics and Hindutva ideology. He advocates for social justice, equality, and secularism. His speeches often address issues such as caste discrimination, economic inequality, and the rights of minorities. He is a proponent of participatory democracy and believes in empowering marginalized communities to participate in the political process. While his views are often considered radical by some, they resonate with a significant section of the youth and those who feel disenfranchised by the existing political system.
After completing his PhD, Kanhaiya Kumar formally entered mainstream politics, joining the Communist Party of India (CPI). In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from his home constituency of Begusarai in Bihar. Despite a spirited campaign, he lost to Giriraj Singh of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The election was closely watched, with many seeing it as a battle between Left and Right ideologies. While he didn't win the election, his participation helped to galvanize support for the CPI and other Left parties. He continued to be a prominent voice in Indian politics, traveling across the country to address rallies and public meetings. His ability to connect with the masses, particularly the youth, made him a sought-after speaker and a force to be reckoned with.
In September 2021, Kanhaiya Kumar joined the Indian National Congress (INC) in the presence of Rahul Gandhi. This move surprised many, as it marked a shift from his earlier association with the CPI. He stated that he joined the Congress to fight against the divisive politics of the BJP and to work towards a more inclusive and progressive India. His decision to join the Congress was seen as an attempt to strengthen the party's appeal among the youth and to provide a counter-narrative to the BJP's dominance. The INC hoped that kanhaiya kumar's charisma and oratory skills would help them to regain lost ground and connect with a wider audience.
Regardless of one's political affiliation, it is undeniable that Kanhaiya Kumar has had a significant impact on Indian politics. He has been instrumental in bringing issues such as social justice, equality, and secularism to the forefront of public discourse. His speeches and activism have inspired many young people to become more engaged in the political process. He has also challenged the dominant narratives of the mainstream media and provided a voice to marginalized communities. His journey
