भूकंप, धरती की सतह में होने वाली एक प्राकृतिक आपदा है, जो अचानक ऊर्जा निकलने के कारण होती है। यह ऊर्जा भूकंपीय तरंगों के रूप में फैलती है, जिससे धरती हिलने लगती है। भूकंप एक विनाशकारी घटना हो सकती है, लेकिन भूकंप के बारे में जानकारी होने से, हम इसके प्रभावों को कम कर सकते हैं।
भूकंप के मुख्य कारण टेक्टोनिक प्लेटों की गति हैं। धरती की सतह कई टेक्टोनिक प्लेटों से बनी है जो धीरे-धीरे चलती रहती हैं। जब ये प्लेटें आपस में टकराती हैं, फिसलती हैं या एक-दूसरे के नीचे दब जाती हैं, तो ऊर्जा निकलती है, जिससे भूकंप आता है। इसके अतिरिक्त, ज्वालामुखी विस्फोट, भूस्खलन और मानव गतिविधियों, जैसे कि बड़े बांधों का निर्माण और खनन, भी भूकंप का कारण बन सकते हैं। मुझे याद है, स्कूल में भूगर्भ शास्त्र की कक्षा में शिक्षक ने एक मॉडल दिखाया था, जिसमें समझाया गया था कि कैसे प्लेटें एक-दूसरे से रगड़ती हैं, और अचानक एक झटके के साथ 'भूकंप' आता है! वो दृश्य आज भी याद है, जिसने इस जटिल प्रक्रिया को समझने में बहुत मदद की।
भूकंप के प्रभाव व्यापक और विनाशकारी हो सकते हैं। सबसे प्रत्यक्ष प्रभाव भूमि का हिलना है, जिससे इमारतें, पुल और अन्य संरचनाएं ढह सकती हैं। भूकंप के कारण भूस्खलन, सुनामी और आग भी लग सकती है। भूकंप से होने वाली मौतों और चोटों की संख्या भूकंप की तीव्रता, जनसंख्या घनत्व और इमारतों की गुणवत्ता पर निर्भर करती है। मुझे याद है 2001 में गुजरात में आए भूकंप की तस्वीरें। चारों तरफ मलबा ही मलबा था। उस आपदा ने मुझे भूकंप की भयावहता का एहसास कराया।
भूकंप से पूरी तरह से बचना संभव नहीं है, लेकिन हम इसके प्रभावों को कम करने के लिए कई उपाय कर सकते हैं।
