read moreMark your calendars! As the days get shorter and the nights grow longer, many of us are already thinking about daylight savings 2025. It's that bi-annual ritual where we either gain or lose an hour of sleep, depending on which direction we're headed. But what exactly is Daylight Saving Time (DST), and why do we even bother with it?
Daylight Saving Time is the practice of advancing clocks during the warmer months so that darkness falls later each day. In simpler terms, we're shifting an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. The idea is to make better use of daylight and conserve energy. While the energy-saving benefits are debatable in modern times, the tradition continues in many countries, including the United States.
For most of the United States, Daylight Saving Time 2025 will begin on Sunday, March 9, 2025. At 2:00 AM local time, clocks will spring forward to 3:00 AM. So, set your alarms (and your coffee makers!) accordingly.
The end of Daylight Saving Time 2025, also known as Standard Time, will occur on Sunday, November 2, 2025. At 2:00 AM local time, clocks will fall back to 1:00 AM. This means you'll get an extra hour of sleep – a welcome bonus as we head into the colder months.
The concept of Daylight Saving Time dates back to the early 20th century. One of its earliest proponents was William Willett, an English builder who argued that people were wasting daylight hours in the morning during the summer. He proposed advancing clocks during the summer months to take advantage of the earlier sunrise.
During World War I, Germany and Austria-Hungary were the first countries to implement DST in 1916 as a way to conserve energy. Other countries, including the United States, soon followed suit. While the practice has been used on and off throughout history, it became more standardized in many countries during and after World War II.
Despite its long history, Daylight Saving Time remains a controversial topic. There are strong arguments both for and against the practice.
