DST will then end on November 2nd, 2025, at 2:00 A.M. local time, when clocks are moved back one hour, returning to standard time.
The idea of DST isn't new. Benjamin Franklin humorously suggested something similar in a 1784 essay, although his intentions were more satirical than practical. The modern concept of DST is credited to William Willett, a British builder, who, in the early 1900s, proposed advancing clocks to take advantage of daylight hours during the summer. Opponents of DST point to potential negative health effects, such as disruptions to sleep patterns and circadian rhythms, leading to increased risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other health problems. They also argue that the time change is inconvenient and disruptive, especially for parents of young children and those with inflexible work schedules. The hassle of resetting clocks twice a year is also a common complaint.
The human body operates on a natural 24-hour cycle called the circadian rhythm, which regulates sleep-wake patterns, hormone release, and other bodily functions. When DST shifts our clocks forward, it effectively shortens our sleep duration and throws our circadian rhythm out of sync. This disruption can lead to a variety of health problems, including fatigue, decreased cognitive performance, and increased risk of mood disorders. Some studies have even linked DST to a higher incidence of heart attacks and strokes in the days following the time change.
While most people adjust to the time change within a few days, some individuals, especially those with pre-existing sleep disorders or sensitivities to changes in routine, may experience more prolonged and severe effects. Simple strategies like gradually adjusting sleep schedules in the days leading up to the time change, maximizing exposure to natural light during the day, and maintaining a consistent sleep-wake routine can help mitigate the negative impacts of DST.
Not all countries observe DST, and those that do implement it at different times and for varying durations. In Europe, DST typically begins on the last Sunday in March and ends on the last Sunday in October. However, there has been ongoing discussion within the European Union about abolishing DST altogether. Some countries, like Japan, South Korea, and India, do not observe DST at all.
