read moreDashami, also known as Vijayadashami, is a significant Hindu festival that marks the end of Durga Puja. As we look ahead to dashami 2025, it's a great time to explore the rich history, cultural importance, and festive spirit surrounding this auspicious occasion.
Vijayadashami literally translates to "Victory on the Tenth Day." It commemorates the triumph of good over evil. The most well-known legend associated with Dashami is the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted for nine nights. These nine nights are celebrated as Navratri, leading up to the grand culmination on Dashami.
Another significant narrative linked to Dashami is the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana. It is said that Lord Rama performed a special "Chandi Homa" and sought the blessings of Goddess Durga to gain strength for the battle. The day marks the triumph of righteousness and the establishment of dharma (righteous conduct).
While the core essence of Dashami remains the same, the exact date varies each year based on the Hindu lunar calendar. As we anticipate dashami 2025, it's best to consult a reliable Hindu calendar or religious authority for the precise date. Generally, it falls in the month of Ashwin, which corresponds to September or October in the Gregorian calendar.
The way Dashami is celebrated differs across India. In West Bengal, it marks the end of Durga Puja with the immersion of the Durga idols in rivers and other water bodies. This immersion, known as "Visarjan," is a poignant moment filled with music, dance, and heartfelt farewells to the Goddess. Sweets are distributed, and people wish each other "Shubho Bijoya," which signifies a happy victory.
In North India, Dashami is celebrated as Dussehra, focusing on the burning of effigies of Ravana, his son Meghnad, and brother Kumbhakarna. These towering effigies are stuffed with firecrackers and set ablaze, symbolizing the destruction of evil. Ramlila performances, theatrical enactments of the Ramayana, are also a major part of Dussehra celebrations in many parts of North India.
In South India, Dashami is celebrated in various ways. In Karnataka, it is part of the Mysore Dasara, a grand festival that showcases the rich cultural heritage of the state. The Mysore Palace is illuminated, and a spectacular procession is held with caparisoned elephants, dancers, and musicians.
No matter where you are, there are several ways to embrace the spirit of Dashami and celebrate the victory of good over evil as we approach dashami 2025:
