At its heart, a comet possesses a nucleus, a solid core typically a few kilometers in diameter. This nucleus is a conglomerate of ice (water ice, carbon dioxide ice, and other frozen compounds), dust particles, and small rocky fragments. Think of it as a cosmic freezer filled with leftovers from the formation of our solar system, dating back over 4.6 billion years.
As a comet approaches the Sun, the increasing heat causes the ice to sublimate, transforming directly from a solid into a gas. This process releases dust and gas, forming a vast, hazy atmosphere around the nucleus called the coma. The coma can extend hundreds of thousands of kilometers into space, making the comet appear much larger than its actual nucleus.
The solar wind, a stream of charged particles emanating from the Sun, interacts with the coma, pushing the gas and dust away to form the comet's tails. A comet typically has two tails: a dust tail, which is broad and curved, and an ion tail (also called a gas tail), which is narrow and points directly away from the Sun. These tails can stretch for millions of kilometers, creating a spectacular display in the night sky.
Comets originate from two main regions in the outer solar system: the Kuiper Belt and the Oort Cloud. The Kuiper Belt, located beyond Neptune's orbit, is a disk-shaped region containing numerous icy bodies, including Pluto and other dwarf planets. Short-period comets, those with orbital periods of less than 200 years, are thought to originate from the Kuiper Belt. These comets have relatively low inclinations (their orbits are close to the plane of the solar system) and orbit the Sun in the same direction as the planets.
The Oort Cloud, on the other hand, is a vast, spherical region located far beyond the Kuiper Belt, extending perhaps halfway to the nearest star. It's believed to contain trillions of icy bodies, remnants from the formation of the solar system. Long-period comets, those with orbital periods of hundreds or even thousands of years, are thought to originate from the Oort Cloud. These comets have highly eccentric orbits and can approach the Sun from any direction.
Throughout history, certain comets have captured the public's imagination and become household names. Halley's Comet, perhaps the most famous comet of all, is a periodic comet that returns to the inner solar system every 75-76 years. Its appearances have been recorded for over two millennia, with the earliest documented sighting dating back to 240 BC. Edmond Halley, an English astronomer, correctly predicted its return in 1705, based on observations of previous comets. The last time Halley's Comet was visible from Earth was in 1986, and it is expected to return in 2061.
Another notable comet is Comet Hale-Bopp, which made a spectacular appearance in 1997. It was one of the brightest comets of the 20th century and was visible to the naked eye for a record-breaking 18 months. Its brightness was attributed to its unusually large size and high activity. Comet Hyakutake, which appeared in 1996, was another bright comet that captured the attention of skywatchers.
Comets are not just beautiful celestial objects; they also hold valuable clues about the formation and evolution of our solar system. By studying the composition of comets, scientists can gain insights into the conditions that prevailed in the early solar system, when the planets were forming. Comets are believed to be relatively unchanged since that time, making them time capsules from the past.

Some scientists believe that cometary impacts could have seeded the early Earth with the building blocks of life.
