Champa Shashti: A Celebration of Lord Khandoba

Champa Shashti is a significant Hindu festival primarily celebrated in Maharashtra, India. It falls on the sixth day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Margashirsha (November-December). This festival is dedicated to Lord Khandoba, a popular deity revered as a manifestation of Lord Shiva. The Legend of Lord Khandoba and the Demons

Legend has it that Lord Khandoba descended to Earth to vanquish the demons Mani and Malla, who were causing havoc and terrorizing the innocent. These demons had acquired immense power through their penance to Lord Brahma, and they misused it to wreak havoc. The gods, unable to defeat them, sought the help of Lord Shiva. Shiva then incarnated as Lord Khandoba, riding a white horse and wielding a sword, accompanied by his consorts, Mhalsa and Banai.

After a fierce battle lasting six days, Lord Khandoba finally defeated and killed Mani and Malla on the day of Champa Shashti. Before dying, Malla, realizing the divine nature of Khandoba, offered his white horse to the Lord as repentance. Mani, on the other hand, asked for a boon that he would be present in every temple of Khandoba. Therefore, in many Khandoba temples, you'll find idols of Mani and Malla alongside Lord Khandoba. This story highlights the triumph of good over evil, a central theme in Hindu mythology.

Rituals and Celebrations of Champa Shashti
