Celebrating Women's Day: A Tribute to Strength

International women's day, observed annually, is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a global celebration of the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The History Behind Women's Day

The seeds of International women's day were sown in the early 20th century amidst a backdrop of industrial expansion and social upheaval. Women were increasingly participating in the workforce, yet they faced significant inequalities in pay, working conditions, and political representation. The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28, 1909, organized by the Socialist Party of America in honor of the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York. This strike saw women protesting against inhumane working conditions. The idea of an International Women's Day was proposed in 1910 at the International Conference of Working Women in Copenhagen. Clara Zetkin, a leader of the German Social Democratic Party, suggested that every country should celebrate a day each year to press for their demands. The proposal was met with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries. The following year, in 1911, International Women's Day was celebrated for the first time in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland on March 19. Over a million women and men attended rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, and hold public office. The date of March 8 became the established date for International Women's Day in 1917, after women in Russia chose to strike and protest for "Bread and Peace" on that day (February 23 on the Julian calendar, which was in use in Russia at the time). Four days later, the Czar abdicated, and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote.
