read moreDiwali, the festival of lights, is a time of immense joy and celebration across India. But did you know that there's another Diwali, equally enchanting and spiritually significant, celebrated primarily in Varanasi? It's called dev diwali, and it’s a spectacle unlike any other.
Dev Diwali, also known as Dev Deepawali, is celebrated on Kartik Purnima, fifteen days after Diwali. While Diwali marks the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after his victory over Ravana, dev diwali celebrates the victory of Lord Shiva over the demon Tripurasura. Hence, it's also known as Tripurotsav. The word "Dev" means "God," and "Deepawali" means "festival of lights," so dev diwali literally translates to "the Diwali of the Gods."
The story goes that the demon Tripurasura had wreaked havoc on the earth, heavens, and the netherworld. He was virtually invincible, having secured boons that made him difficult to defeat. The Gods, desperate for a solution, turned to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, in his fierce form, engaged Tripurasura in a fierce battle and finally vanquished him. The Gods, overjoyed by this victory, descended to Varanasi and lit up the ghats with lamps to celebrate. This tradition continues to this day, making Varanasi the epicenter of Dev Diwali celebrations.
Varanasi, the ancient city on the banks of the Ganges, comes alive during Dev Diwali. The ghats, which are the riverfront steps leading to the Ganges, are illuminated with millions of earthen lamps, creating a breathtaking panorama. Imagine a shimmering cascade of light reflecting on the dark waters of the Ganges – it's a sight that truly captures the soul.
The celebrations begin in the evening with the Ganga Aarti, a spectacular ritual where priests offer prayers to the Ganges River with synchronized movements, chanting, and the waving of multi-tiered lamps. The air is filled with the scent of incense, the sound of bells, and the rhythmic chanting of mantras, creating an atmosphere of profound spirituality.
After the Ganga Aarti, the ghats become a stage for cultural performances. Folk dances, music, and theatrical performances depicting scenes from Hindu mythology are organized, adding to the festive spirit. People light diyas (earthen lamps) and place them on the ghats, along with flower offerings and sweets. Fireworks light up the night sky, adding a touch of magic to the already enchanting atmosphere.
While Varanasi is the most prominent location for Dev Diwali celebrations, the festival is also observed in other parts of India, albeit on a smaller scale. Temples dedicated to Lord Shiva are often illuminated, and special prayers are offered. In some regions, people also celebrate Dev Diwali by cleaning their homes and decorating them with diyas and rangolis (colorful patterns made on the floor with colored powder).
I remember witnessing Dev Diwali in Varanasi a few years ago. The sheer scale of the celebrations was overwhelming. Walking along the ghats, surrounded by the twinkling lights and the chanting of prayers, I felt a sense of peace and connection that I had never experienced before. The energy of the city was palpable, a vibrant mix of faith, tradition, and celebration. It was an experience that left an indelible mark on my soul.
Dev Diwali is more than just a festival of lights; it's a celebration of good over evil, a testament to the power of faith, and a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of India. It's a time for reflection, gratitude, and renewal. The festival provides a unique opportunity to witness the vibrant traditions of Hinduism and experience the spiritual energy of Varanasi, one of the oldest living cities in the world.
