दिवाली से जुड़ी कई पौराणिक कथाएं हैं, जिनमें से सबसे लोकप्रिय भगवान राम की कहानी है। माना जाता है कि भगवान राम 14 वर्ष के वनवास के बाद अपनी पत्नी सीता और भाई लक्ष्मण के साथ अयोध्या लौटे थे। अयोध्या के लोगों ने उनका स्वागत दीये जलाकर और मिठाइयां बांटकर किया था। इसलिए, दिवाली को भगवान राम की घर वापसी के रूप में मनाया जाता है।
एक अन्य पौराणिक कथा भगवान कृष्ण से जुड़ी है, जिन्होंने नरकासुर नामक राक्षस का वध किया था। नरकासुर ने लोगों को बहुत परेशान किया था, और भगवान कृष्ण ने उसे मारकर लोगों को राहत दिलाई थी। इसलिए, दिवाली को नरकासुर पर भगवान कृष्ण की जीत के रूप में भी मनाया जाता है।
