read moreArvind Kejriwal is a name that resonates throughout India's political landscape. From his early days as a social activist to his current role as the Chief Minister of Delhi, his journey has been marked by significant milestones and controversies. Understanding his career, policies, and impact requires delving into the various facets of his life and political career.
Born in Haryana, Arvind Kejriwal's early life was rooted in middle-class values and academic pursuits. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, where he studied mechanical engineering. This background in engineering might seem distant from politics, but it instilled in him a problem-solving approach that he would later apply to governance. After graduating, he joined the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), a coveted position that offered stability and social prestige.
Kejriwal's stint in the IRS was relatively short-lived. He soon became disillusioned with the systemic corruption he witnessed firsthand. This experience fueled his desire to fight for transparency and accountability in governance. He took leave from his job and, along with like-minded individuals, founded Parivartan, an organization aimed at increasing citizen participation in governance and fighting corruption. Parivartan used Right to Information (RTI) applications to expose corruption in various government departments, gaining widespread attention and support.
The anti-corruption movement gained momentum in the late 2000s and early 2010s, largely driven by figures like Anna Hazare and arvind kejriwal. The movement demanded the enactment of the Jan Lokpal Bill, an anti-corruption legislation aimed at establishing an independent ombudsman to investigate corruption charges against public officials. The movement captured the imagination of the Indian public, with massive rallies and protests taking place across the country. While the Jan Lokpal Bill never became law in its original form, the movement significantly raised awareness about corruption and paved the way for new political formations.
In 2012, Arvind Kejriwal and his associates decided to formalize their political aspirations by forming the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which translates to "Common Man's Party." The AAP positioned itself as an alternative to the established political parties, promising clean governance, transparency, and a focus on the needs of ordinary citizens. The party's symbol, a broom, represented its commitment to sweeping away corruption and inefficiency.
The AAP's entry into electoral politics was nothing short of dramatic. In the 2013 Delhi Assembly elections, the party surprised everyone by winning 28 out of 70 seats. Although it fell short of a majority, the AAP formed a minority government with outside support from the Indian National Congress. However, this government lasted only 49 days, as Kejriwal resigned over his inability to pass the Jan Lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly. This short stint in power was a learning experience for the AAP, highlighting the challenges of navigating the complexities of Indian politics.
Undeterred, the AAP contested the 2015 Delhi Assembly elections with renewed vigor. This time, the party achieved a landslide victory, winning 67 out of 70 seats. This unprecedented mandate demonstrated the AAP's popularity among the Delhi electorate, who were drawn to its promises of good governance, affordable utilities, and improved public services. arvind kejriwal was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi for the second time.
Under Kejriwal's leadership, the Delhi government has implemented several significant policies and initiatives. One of the most notable is the provision of subsidized electricity and water to households, which has significantly reduced the financial burden on low-income families. The government has also invested heavily in improving the quality of education in government schools, with a focus on teacher training, infrastructure development, and innovative teaching methods. Another key initiative is the Mohalla Clinic program, which provides free primary healthcare services to residents in their neighborhoods. These clinics have significantly improved access to healthcare, particularly for the poor and marginalized.
Kejriwal's tenure as Chief Minister has not been without its challenges and controversies. The AAP government has frequently clashed with the central government, particularly over issues of jurisdiction and control over various departments. Accusations of corruption and mismanagement have also been leveled against the AAP, although the party has consistently
