Khetarpal, served in the Indian Army, instilling in young Arun a deep sense of patriotism and discipline. He received his early education at The Lawrence School, Sanawar, a prestigious institution known for its rigorous academic and physical training. It was here that he honed his leadership skills and developed the camaraderie that would later define his military service.
Growing up, Arun was known for his cheerful disposition, his academic prowess, and his exceptional sporting abilities. He excelled in various sports, particularly cricket and hockey, showcasing his competitive spirit and his ability to work effectively as part of a team. These formative years played a crucial role in shaping him into the courageous and determined officer he would later become.
Following in his father's footsteps, arun khetarpal joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Khadakwasla. He excelled in his training, demonstrating exceptional leadership qualities and a natural aptitude for military tactics. After graduating from the NDA, he was commissioned into the 17 Poona Horse regiment of the Indian Army in June 1971, a prestigious armored regiment with a rich history of valor and service.
The 17 Poona Horse was known for its professionalism and its esprit de corps. Arun quickly integrated into the regiment, earning the respect of his fellow officers and soldiers. He was a dedicated and hardworking officer, always striving to improve his skills and knowledge. He embraced the challenges of military life with enthusiasm and a deep sense of responsibility.
The Indo-Pakistani War of 1971 presented Arun Khetarpal with the ultimate test of his courage and his commitment to his country. He was part of the 17 Poona Horse, tasked with establishing a bridgehead across the Basantar River in the Shakargarh sector. This was a crucial operation, aimed at disrupting Pakistani supply lines and advancing into enemy territory.
On December 16, 1971, the Pakistani army launched a fierce counter-attack, attempting to dislodge the Indian forces from their newly established bridgehead. The fighting was intense, with tanks clashing in a brutal and relentless battle. Arun Khetarpal, commanding a troop of three tanks, found himself in the thick of the action.
Despite being heavily outnumbered and facing relentless enemy fire, Arun Khetarpal displayed extraordinary courage and leadership. He single-handedly destroyed several Pakistani tanks, disrupting their attack and preventing them from breaking through the Indian defenses. His bravery inspired his fellow soldiers and helped to turn the tide of the battle.
In the face of overwhelming odds, Arun refused to abandon his position, even after his own tank was hit. He continued to fight with unwavering determination, knowing that the fate of the battle, and perhaps even the war, rested on his shoulders. His last words, reportedly, were "No, Sir, I will not abandon my tank. I will get these bastards!" before he went on to destroy another enemy tank.
Arun Khetarpal was killed in action on December 16, 1971, during the Battle of Basantar. His sacrifice was instrumental in securing a decisive victory for India in the war. He was posthumously awarded the Param Vir Chakra, India's highest military decoration, for his exceptional bravery and selflessness in the face of the enemy.
