भारत में बैंकिंग का इतिहास प्राचीन काल से जुड़ा है। वैदिक काल में, साहूकार और महाजन धन उधार देने का काम करते थे। मुगल काल में, सराफों ने बैंकिंग गतिविधियों में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाई। आधुनिक बैंकिंग की शुरुआत 18वीं शताब्दी में हुई, जब यूरोपीय व्यापारियों ने भारत में बैंक स्थापित किए। 1770 में स्थापित बैंक ऑफ हिंदुस्तान भारत का पहला बैंक था।
